The ADHD Support Group for Greenwich is a relatively new group that was launched in July 2005. The group is currently organised by Nicola & Huseyin Hasan who are also parents of a child who has ADHD.
The group is affiliated with ADDISS which is our National organisation; we are registered with Contact a Family and work closely with Parent Partnership. We are also looking to register as a local charity and attract local sponsors in the near future.
The group meets monthly at Wensley Close in Eltham, the Local Authority and the PCT have agreed for the group to use their facilities at 3 Wensley Close, Eltham SE9 which is where the Children with Disabilities Team are currently based. This will usually be the last Saturday in every month between 1pm and 3pm. We hope to organise other activities and social events for families in the Borough as the group further develops and attracts new members.
There is now on-line assistance available for anyone in need of advice or support regarding ADHD or any of the co-morbidities. The e-mail service is proving to be very popular and we aim to respond promptly.
The answering service is regularly up-dated with the dates of the forthcoming groups. Even though we may be unable to return calls at this time, information can be posted out regarding the group if you leave your contact details.
The group is primarily for parents & carers, who are feeling alone, stressed, isolated or generally having difficulty in coping with their child's challenging behaviour.
The group enables parents to meet up with other parents who are experiencing similar problems to themselves in a non-threatening environment.
Parent's who currently attend have all felt this to be a valuable and enlightening experience. Feedback so far indicates that parents attending the group feel less isolated and through shared experience feel more valued and confident.
The group's focus will be primarily about supporting parents & carers and reducing the isolation that is often felt by a parent caring for a child with extremely obnoxious, anti-social and very difficult behaviour.
The expectation is about empowering parents to take back the control, which is often lost when trying to parent a child who has ADHD.
In addition to information & support, we hope to inform parents about the amazing 1 2 3 Magic Programme which is a behaviour modification for ADHD designed by Dr Thomas W Phelan who is an internationally renowned expert and lecturer on Child Discipline and ADHD.
Families, where ADHD is present often experience difficulties that can lead to family breakdown, parents separating and in extreme circumstances, children entering the Care System and or the Criminal Justice System. Our group aims to minimise/prevent these negative outcomes for families in the Borough of Greenwich.
Our group welcomes newcomers and will endeavour to offer a warm welcome and on-going support to all families living in the Borough of Greenwich.
Yours Sincerely
Nicola & Huseyin Hasan
