Research Project - Neurodivergence and Active Travel in Scotland

Sustrans is a charity making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle. They are looking for participants for an exciting research project on neurodivergence and active travel. If you are interested in taking part, please fill in this form.

The research: This project is funded by Transport Scotland and aims to understand neurodivergent people’s experiences and opinions of active travel, with a focus on ADHD and autism. Through this research we hope to build evidence in an under-researched area, helping shape active travel policies and infrastructure design to be more inclusive.

The interview: Individual interviews will be conducted by a researcher from Sustrans’ Research and Monitoring Unit. The interview can be treated as more of an informal conversation than a formal interview. We will have a set of questions to ask each participant, but these are only a guide and we are interested to hear about any relevant experiences and thoughts which we may not have considered!

The interview will focus on two main areas:
- how neurodivergence impacts your travel choices and experiences
- what enables you to travel actively, or what would enable you to overcome any barriers preventing you from travelling actively.

How long will the interview last?: Between 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how much we have to talk about!

When will the interview be?: Between mid-November and mid-December. A member of the research team will contact you to discuss your availability.

Where will the interview take place?: Interviews will be via online video call, using Microsoft Teams (or other software such as Zoom or telephone, if you prefer). An in-person interview in Edinburgh can be arranged if required.

What is active travel?: ‘Active travel’ refers to everyday journeys made by walking, cycling or wheeling – this includes a variety of modes such as wheelchairs, scooters and skateboards.

Who we are: Sustrans is the charity making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle. Our vision is a society where the way we travel creates healthier places and happier lives for everyone. Our research unit produces evidence to support active travel. There are three researchers in the project team, based in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Bristol.

Who we are looking for: People with ADHD and/or autism, who are over 18 and living in Scotland. This includes people who are self-diagnosed, as we recognise that some groups have lower rates of diagnosis, that diagnosis is a slow and expensive process and some people may not seek a formal diagnosis.

Do I need to cycle or walk regularly to take part?: No. You do not need to be a cyclist, someone who walks regularly, or a mobility aid user to take part.

How will I be compensated?: If you are selected to take part, you will receive a £40 Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s voucher after completing the interview.

Do I have to take part?: Participation is voluntary. You don’t have to answer a question if you don’t want to, and you have the right to leave the interview at any point.

How will my data be used?: The interview will be recorded to help us to accurately capture what you tell us in your own words. The recording will be used to produce a transcript, which will be anonymised and analysed by a small team of researchers at Sustrans to produce a report for Transport Scotland. The report may be published on our website, but you will not be identifiable. Once the data has been analysed, the recording will be deleted.

Will I be identifiable?: All data will be anonymous. We will not include your name, address or any other information which could identify you in our report.

How will my accessibility requirements be considered?: Please let us know if there are any reasonable adjustments we can make to enable you to participate in the research by emailing neurodivergence.research@sustrans.org.uk . This could include things like sharing the questions with you in advance, providing visual aids, or scheduling breaks in the interview.
