Like Father Like Son
By John
I watch him closely and see his eyes lose focus
Just for the tiniest second
He just went on a trip and I wonder
I have I been to that world he just visited
I watch him struggle with his homework
And I reminisce about my past.
Was that the same place I got stuck
For two weeks because I didn't understand
I watch him build with a toy
Something that amazes him
But which to my adult mind
Looks like just a block
I watch him Rage against the machine
That which rules our lives moment to moment
Only to have to world come crashing down
Despite his best efforts of defense
I know that all I can do for him
Is to hold him when he is beaten
and to hold him back
when all he can do strike
I tell him I was very much like him
And he smiles that way that annoys me
Like he knows I'm just saying that
So that he'll think I understand
Little does he know that I
Not so long ago now
Was sitting on the edge of life
Waiting to be tipped to either side
He will feel this to at some point
But unlike his father
He will have a friend close by
One who does know just how he feels
To my son Marc I love you
