Armed Forces Letter

Thank you for your email of 9 July 2002 to the Ministry of Defence enquiring wither there are any restrictions on entry to the Armed Forces for persons who are suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and who are prescribed Methylphenidate. Your correspondence has been passed to this department and I have been asked to reply.

A history of ADHD is not a bar to entry to the Armed Forces providing the condition has been absent for two years without treatment and has not been by violence or other criminality. Individuals with ADHD who are on medication, such as Methylphenidate would be barred from entry.

Service personal must be fit to serve anywhere in the world at any time and in locations where indeed may be or remote and re-supply uncertain or impossible. Therefore of which conditions requiring periodic medical care or review, or taking long-term medication or in whom of a pre-existing condition might occur are not considered suitable for military service. Many conditions and especially those controlled by medication or other intervention which may not limit civilian employment are, nevertheless incompatible with military service.

I hope this is helpful.
