Possible Sources of Help including some financial

There is an enormous range of charitable organisations that you may be able to approach for a one-off grant. They vary greatly, both in terms of the amounts of money they have and their eligibility criteria. Some may only be open to people who live in a particular geographical region, others to those who have been employed in a particular profession. A useful reference book to consult if you are looking for this kind of financial help is 'A Guide to Grants for Individuals in Need', edited by David Casson and Paul Brown, Directory of Social Change, ISBN 0 907164 86 2. You may be able to find a copy of this in the reference section of your local library.

BLITZ HOLIDAY

Blitz Everybody deserves a holiday but sadly with the ongoing cuts in government spending and the rising cost of day to day living, many people are finding that they are simply unable to afford a holiday. In short a holiday is becoming a luxury rather than an essential.

BLITZ has been set up with the intention of raising money and funds to subsidise short breaks in Blackpool and St Anne’s. The Bond Hotel Group will be donating generously to Blitz because we sincerely believe that everybody should be given the chance to enjoy a short break away from the mundane experience of day to day life.

The benefits of taking a short break are obvious, to spend quality time with carers, friends and family away from any difficult routines or circumstances.

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee funding to all applicants and we expect that the demand for holiday funding will be much greater than the funding available. We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible, although funding will not be issued on a first come first served basis. To ensure our donations help as many people as possible, holidays are subsidised rather than paid for outright.

GROUP BREAKS
We are hoping to be in the position of offering a substantial contribution towards an organised break for 8 or more people living with a disability. We can understand the predicament that many care homes are finding themselves in whilst trading in this current economic climate and are yet obliged to ensure their residents get a well deserved holiday. Maybe BLITZ could offer a helping hand.

APPLICATIONS
You can make an application for funding by either – Go to www.bondholidays.co.uk and at the right hand side is a section for BLITZ holiday funding with an on line application form.

Children Today Charitable Trust

Children today provide funding for specialist equipment and aids for children and young people with disabilities. If your child needs a specialist piece of equipment, you can apply for a grant towards the costs. They will only assist with the purchase of equipment for individuals - not Groups, Schools, Clubs or Societies Applications will only be accepted in the name of the person for whom the equipment is required, their parent or legal guardian. The grants are mean tested but we understand that disability brings additional expenses, and look at each application sympathetically. They support applications for equipment that is going to improve and enhance a child's quality of life or independence. Financial assistance does not extend towards the purchase or upkeep of motor vehicles, building extensions, non-specialist adaptations, travel expenses or holidays. They do not fund computers or computer software independently. All enquiries first pass through another charity called the Aidis Trust, who will assess each child. If he or she falls within their criteria, Aidis will contact Children Today for joint funding.
If you require an application form, please contact Aidis directly on 01202 695244.

The 3H Foundation

The 3H Foundation, formerly known as 3H Fund (Helping Hands for Holidays), has been operating for nearly 50 years supporting those with disabilities and carers to have holidays and short respite breaks.

Working with like-minded partner organisations we provide opportunities for those with disabilities to have a holiday away independently from their day to day carers through our group holiday programme.

We help families with a disabled family member to have a holiday in the UK by awarding a modest grant. Carers are able to apply for a carer grant enabling them to have a period of respite away without their cared for. As getting away for a few hours is important for carers we also provide short respite breaks where adult carers are able to relax including afternoon teas, pamper hampers or spa days.

Our TeensPLUS programme enables young people with disabilities and young carers aged 13 - 25 to take part in home-based activity challenges, receive a young carer hamper or a day out with a partner organisation.

Play and leisure

All children, including disabled children, have the right to play, have fun and take part in recreational activities. This is important as play has a very important role in a child's development. Play can help develop speech, sensory skills, imagination, independence and social skills. Toys and play can be fun as well as educational and therapeutic. It is crucial that all children, whatever their abilities are given the opportunity to play and access leisure facilities. For further advice and information on suitable toys you can speak to a paediatric occupational therapist. Through activity and play the paediatric occupational therapist works with children to help them attain the highest possible quality of life. The paediatric occupational therapist can work in a variety of settings including the NHS, social services, educational or charitable organisations.

There may also be a local play scheme or parent support group in your area where toys and ideas can be exchanged. Contact the help line for local information.

There are a number of commercial outlets and specialist suppliers. Some of these are listed under 'Commercial Suppliers.'
